Oral Wegovy, and the morning routine that makes it work

Same molecule as the injection, in a tablet that only works if you take it the right way. Empty stomach, small sip of water, 30 minutes before anything else.

The Wegovy pill was approved by the FDA on 22 December 2025 and reached pharmacies in January 2026. It is oral semaglutide at a maintenance dose of 25 mg once a day, for chronic weight management and for cardiovascular risk reduction in adults with heart disease and obesity or overweight. It is the same molecule as the Wegovy injection and the same molecule as Rybelsus, the older diabetes tablet, at a higher dose.

Why the routine matters

Semaglutide is a peptide, and peptides are digested like food. The tablet gets around that with an absorption enhancer that only works in an empty stomach with very little water. So the rule is strict:

  1. First thing in the morning, before food, drink or any other tablet.
  2. Swallow whole with no more than about 120 ml (4 ounces) of plain water.
  3. Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking other medication.

Breaking the rule does not make the tablet dangerous. It makes it not work, because much less of the dose is absorbed. People who take it with coffee are, in effect, taking a smaller dose than they think.

The dose ladder

Wegovy pill titration
PeriodDoseNotes
Weeks 1 to 41.5 mg once dailyStarter dose
Weeks 5 to 84 mg once daily
Weeks 9 to 129 mg once daily
Week 13 on25 mg once dailyMaintenance dose

Each step is four weeks, the same rhythm as the injection, for the same reason: the first weeks of a step are the rough ones and the gut needs the time. Twenty-five milligrams a day is the maintenance dose. The numbers look nothing like the 2.4 mg injection because so little of an oral peptide is absorbed, not because the tablet is ten times the drug.

Results and side effects

In the OASIS trials, oral semaglutide at the 25 mg dose produced weight loss in the same range as the injection, around 14 to 15 percent over 64 weeks. Side effects are the GLP-1 set: nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation, mostly early in each step, with the same label warnings as the injection. The side effects page has the full list and the red flags.

Missed a tablet

Skip it and take the next one the following morning. Do not take two. If you have eaten before remembering, the day is gone; a tablet on a full stomach is mostly wasted.

Pill or pen

The injection is once a week and indifferent to breakfast. The tablet is once a day and owns the first half hour of your morning. Some people find the daily routine easier to keep than a weekly one; others forget it by day ten. The tablet needs no refrigeration and no sharps, travels easily, and has a lower self-pay price at the starter dose. The switching page covers moving between them. Tracking it

Two things to log: that you took it, and that you took it right. A morning reminder, a streak on the watch, and the step date. Peptide AI has the Wegovy pill as a daily compound on the free tier. The oral Wegovy tracker page has the setup.

Questions people ask

How do you take the Wegovy pill?

First thing in the morning on an empty stomach, swallowed whole with no more than about 120 ml of plain water, then at least 30 minutes before any food, drink or other medication.

What is the dose of oral Wegovy?

1.5 mg daily for 4 weeks, then 4 mg, then 9 mg, then 25 mg daily as the maintenance dose, each step held at least 4 weeks.

Is the Wegovy pill as effective as the injection?

In the OASIS trials, 25 mg oral semaglutide produced weight loss in the same range as the 2.4 mg injection, around 14 to 15 percent over 64 weeks, provided it is taken correctly.

What if I take the Wegovy pill with food?

Much less of it is absorbed. It is not dangerous, but that day’s dose is mostly lost. Skip, and take the next tablet correctly the following morning.
