The Oura Readiness Score: what goes in, what the bands mean, what is proprietary
Readiness is Oura's morning verdict on how recovered you are. Oura publishes its nine contributors and the windows it compares. It does not publish the weights.
Oura's Readiness Score is a 0 to 100 number shown each morning. It is built from overnight physiology (resting heart rate, HRV, temperature), sleep, and recent activity, each compared with your own longer-term pattern. This page describes it from Oura's own help centre and sets each input against the independent research on how well a ring measures it.
The score bands
| Score | Oura label | Oura guidance |
|---|---|---|
| 85 to 100 | Optimal | Oura: "may be a sign that you are ready to take on new challenges" |
| 70 to 84 | Good | |
| 60 to 69 | Fair | Oura: scores below 70 suggest you may benefit from prioritising rest and recovery in the indicated areas |
| 0 to 59 | Pay attention |
The nine contributors
| Contributor | What Oura says it compares | Window |
|---|---|---|
| Resting heart rate | The night's lowest heart rate compared with your typical level | Previous night vs long-term (about two months) |
| HRV balance | Recent heart rate variability against your longer-term average | Past 14 days vs about three months, recent days weighted more |
| Body temperature | Last night's skin temperature against your long-term nightly average | Previous night vs long-term |
| Recovery index | How long you slept after heart rate reached its nightly low | The night |
| Sleep | Total sleep, including confirmed naps, against your baseline | Past 24 hours |
| Sleep balance | Sleep debt against your baseline and general adult recommendations | Past two weeks |
| Sleep regularity | Consistency of bed and wake times; naps do not count | Previous two weeks |
| Previous day activity | Yesterday's activity and inactivity against your averages and recommended movement | The day before |
| Activity balance | Recent activity against your longer-term level | Past 14 days vs about two months |
Oura says it can take up to two weeks for the app to learn your personal averages. Two contributors are worth noting. For HRV balance and activity balance, both too high and too low can lower the score, because Oura treats a sharp change in either direction as a sign of imbalance. And the score is relative: a Readiness of 85 means you are near your own baseline, not that your HRV is high by population standards.
What is proprietary
Oura publishes the contributors and the windows. It does not publish how much each contributor weighs, the shape of the curve that turns a deviation into points, or how contributors interact. That is normal for consumer scores. It does mean the Readiness number cannot be checked or reproduced independently. The inputs can.
How good are the inputs?
| Study | Year, journal | Who and how many | Design | Main result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stone et al. | 2021, Frontiers in Sports and Active Living | 5 healthy adults, 148 trials | Seven devices vs multi-lead ECG at rest | Resting heart rate accurate on all devices; Oura RMSSD mean absolute percentage error 6.84% |
| Miller et al. | 2022, Sensors | 53 adults, one lab night | Six devices vs PSG and ECG | Oura Gen 2 overnight heart rate bias 0.1 bpm (ICC 0.85); RMSSD bias -10.2 ms (ICC 0.63); four-stage sleep agreement 61% |
| Svensson et al. | 2024, Sleep Medicine | 96 adults aged 20 to 70 | Oura Gen3, algorithm 2.0, vs home PSG | Total, light and deep sleep not significantly different from PSG; sleep sensitivity about 94%, wake specificity about 73 to 75% (Oura-funded) |
| Maijala et al. | 2019, BMC Women's Health | 22 women, about 115 days each | Nightly finger skin temperature from Oura vs oral temperature | Skin temperature tracked the cycle, 0.30 °C higher in the luteal phase; correlated with oral temperature (r = 0.56) |
Resting heart rate is measured well. Nightly HRV is reasonably close to ECG on average, with more scatter on individual nights. Temperature is reported as a deviation from your baseline rather than an absolute value; Oura says it measures from the skin, not core temperature. Sleep stage inputs carry the most uncertainty, and they feed the sleep-related contributors.
Using Readiness sensibly
- Look at the contributor that moved. A low score driven by body temperature on a night you feel unwell means something different from one driven by a late night.
- Expect lower scores after alcohol. Alcohol lowers HRV and raises sleeping heart rate in a dose-dependent way; in 4,098 Finnish employees an HRV-derived recovery measure fell by 9.3 to 39.2 percentage points.
- Expect a dip after a training increase. Activity balance and HRV balance both respond to load. A dip after a hard block is the system working, not failure.
- Expect drift on a new medicine. GLP-1 receptor agonists raise resting heart rate by 1 to 4 bpm on average, according to the Wegovy label. If your resting heart rate baseline rises, the resting heart rate contributor will mark you down until the baseline catches up. See wearable data on a GLP-1.
- Do not let it overrule how you feel. Oura states that its ring is not a medical device. A good score does not rule out illness and a poor score is not a diagnosis.
Compared with other scores
WHOOP Recovery and Garmin Body Battery answer a similar question with different inputs and presentation. See WHOOP Recovery and Garmin Body Battery. All three rest on the same few physiological signals, so they usually move in the same direction even when the numbers differ.
Logging it
Oura connects to Peptide AI directly through wearable integrations. Readiness, HRV, resting heart rate, temperature and sleep land on the timeline next to the dose log, the training log and lab results.
Questions people ask
What is a good Oura Readiness Score?
Oura labels 85 to 100 optimal, 70 to 84 good, 60 to 69 fair and 0 to 59 pay attention. Scores are relative to your own baseline.
What affects the Oura Readiness Score?
Nine contributors: resting heart rate, HRV balance, body temperature, recovery index, sleep, sleep balance, sleep regularity, previous day activity and activity balance.
How long does Oura take to learn my baseline?
Oura says it can take up to two weeks to learn your personal averages for the contributors.
Is the Readiness formula public?
No. Oura publishes the contributors and time windows but not how each is weighted.
Why is my Readiness low after drinking?
Alcohol lowers overnight HRV and raises sleeping heart rate. In a study of 4,098 people, an HRV-based recovery measure fell by up to 39.2 percentage points after high alcohol intake.
